About 20 percent of people with West Nile Virus experience flu-like symptoms
Niagara has its first human case of West Nile Virus this year.
Public Health says while most people with the virus don't get sick, about 20 percent experience flu-like symptoms and fatigue.
About one percent have severe symptoms like neck stiffness, a rapid severe headache, light sensitivity, confusion and weakness.
To prevent mosquito bites and protect yourself from the virus, Public Health recommends the following:
- Drain standing water around the home where mosquitoes may breed (e.g., bird baths, plant saucers, tires, toys, pails and wheelbarrows)
- Repair damaged doors and window screens
- Avoid mosquito-infested areas, such as storm sewers
- Wear long-sleeved shirts, hats, long pants, socks and shoes that cover the feet - especially at dawn and in the evening when mosquitoes are active or in shaded parkland
- Use insect repellants containing DEET or Icaridin
