They don't like taxpayers paying for complaint against Mike Strange
Plenty of raised eyebrows and looks of disgust at Niagara Falls council last night during review of an Integrity Commissioners report.
They learned a Niagara Falls resident has cost taxpayers at least $177,000 in complaints, the latest against Councillor Mike Strange, complaining about behaviour in a council meeting, all of which have been deemed frivolous.
Mayor Jim Diodati says they'll seek action against Joedy Burdett's claims. "Maybe there's gotta be an escalating schedule of fees, maybe we need to go to the Integrity Commissioner to find out what we're allowed to do, for frequent flyers, who abuse the process and force the taxpayers of the city to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for their own entertainment purposes."
The Integrity Commissioner's full report is on the city's website.
Councillor Victor Pietrangelo noted it can be about getting media attention. "Maybe they were a past candidate, maybe they want to be a future candidate, I know Mr. Burdett falls into both those categories. But, they're looking for an elevation in their political profile, that's one of the reasons. The other reason is simply to knock down the member that's here."
The Integrity Commissioner strongly condemned the complaint by Burdett, noting the complainant is very familiar with the process, but kept pushing his views despite the obvious outcome.
Burdett sat quietly throughout the whole meeting.
