This comes after complaints about condition and use of fountains at city parks
A member of the Greater Niagara Baseball Association has been successful in getting the City of Niagara Falls to look at returning water in plastic bottles to Oaks Park.
Marty Petrullo acknowledged banning plastic bottles in 2009, but noted recycling bins are at the park.
He says existing water fountains are disgusting. "I've sat on the sidelines and watched a man put his hand through a dog bag, and then went to that fountain in order to wash his hands. People are putting their dogs up to that same fountain, and are letting their dogs drink out of that water."
City staff say the intent of the fountain was to fill water bottles, not drink directly from it.
Councillor Vince Kerrio added times have changed since banning plastic in 2009. "It's sold in every outlet in the city now... every grocery store, every convenience store, every gas station, sells water in plastic water bottles. I understand we were trying to lead back then."
City staff say they'll look at installing guards on the fountains to prevent hand washing or dogs from drinking.
