Niagara Company to Resurface Thorold Roads

Thorold councillors hearing of problem areas, and which to tackle in order

The City of Thorold is balancing what roads to fix, when to do them, and how to pay for it.

Councillors recently discussed River Street, St. David's Road, and Cataract Road, after they awarded an over $500,000 road surfacing contract to Niagara Concrete Forming.

They also want to upload certain roads to the Niagara region, something Councillor Henry D'Angela recalls success with.  "When Collier Road got uploaded, St. Catharines benefited because Burleigh Hill then became a regional road, and you can see now it's maintained at a higher standard, so it wasn't as slippery in the winter time because the region plows that quite substantially."

City staff say they try to match surfacing and patchwork with the weather and season.

When it comes to St. David's Road, Councillor D'Angela joked drivers have to drive on the other side of it to avoid car damage.

Director of Public Works Geoff Holman adds Cataract Road fell apart quickly.  "But at the same time, we have to keep an eye on some of the other roads in our network, that have maybe higher traffic volumes, and make a guess in the spring when the frost comes out of the ground, and figure out where our best investment is."

Mayor Terry Ugulini reminded council it's up to it to decide when certain roads get done through budget season.
