Niagara Adding More Speed Cameras

The region also says one person has been charged with vandalism, a problem happening province-wide

Don't expect the Niagara Region to slow down in putting up more speed cameras, in fact, four more are coming next year.

Director of Transportation Frank Tassone says data shows a 7km/h reduction in speed, meaning less severity in a collision.

He also spoke contrary to Premier Doug Ford, who wants them gone, and who calls them a cash grab.  "This is not a revenue generating exercise, and the success of the program is not measured on how many charges are issued, and how much revenue is collected... it's a declining issuance of charges in showing a greater adherrence to the speed limit."

He adds there's been excellent response from the community to the cameras.

As for vandalism of cameras that's been happening all over province, he says Toronto is looking at some options with the company that makes them, who also pays for the damage.

He says they've had some success in Niagara.  "What I can say is that what we've done here in Niagara is we are rolling out surveillance cameras on selected locations, and we have been advised by the NRP that the first charge has been laid in respect to vandalism of cameras."
