Some councillors acknowledged great work by some charities, but added others need support too
Niagara Falls city council looking to a committee to examine how funding is dispersed to various community groups.
Women's Place of South Niagara, the YWCA and Project Share spoke to council Tuesday night, discussing how funding helps their missions.
Councillor Victor Pietrangelo acknowledged their importance, but added there's many others too.
"It always amazes me when I read some of them that we have some of these great non-profits in our city, who are saying we have a very closed system here in the City of Niagara Falls, in the sense that you've chosen to fund a few organizations and you're not funding any of the others," he says.
The committee would come back within two years with a system to help council decide how grants and loans are handed out. Council will have the final decision as to the direction taken.
Councillor Lori Lococo pointed out the amount spent on those needing help is almost nothing. "It's in our strategic priorities. So I think when we're working under strategic priorities moving forward, I'm pretty sure most of us as councillors we campaigned on homelessness, affordable housing, maybe mental health addiction, and a lot of the other candidates did as well."
She agreed with Councillor Pietrangelo there needs to be committed, dedicated funding.
