City of Niagara Falls moving forward with NHL sized rink, and more, prepared to make changes to plan if needed
Overwhelming support of Niagara Falls city council to keep looking at replacing the ice rink at Chippewa Arena with an NHL sized rink, as opposed to renovating.
It would also include an indoor turf facility, and new library, the most costly option at $60-70-million.
Director of Finance Tiffany Clark with the breakdown per household of a $40-million bill. "For 30-years, would be annual payments of about $2.6-million, the annual impact to the average household would be about $47 a year, or $4 a month.... a $60-million debenture would be $70 a year, and that's about $6 a month."
City surveys show the NHL sized rink is the preferred option of residents.
Mayor Jim Diodati says the priority is the rink, followed by a turf field. "People that want a place for their soccer, their baseball, their lacrosse, their cricket... all their sports in the winter time, because there's less facilities around the region now, and an opportunity to generate revenue, because we rent the fields."
But he also says the other top priority of residents the city hears about is roads.
