NDP Leadership Race Begins this Fall

A new federal NDP leader will be appointed in the spring of 2026.

CANADA - The federal NDP will have a new leader this spring.

According to a framework adopted by the party's national council, a six-month race to replace Jagmeet Singh will begin in September. The new leader will be announced at the party's national convention in Winnipeg, no later than March 29th, 2026.

The entry fee for the leadership contest is set at $100,000 per candidate, the formalized rules will be posted on the party's website before it begins.

Jagmeet Singh was the Member of Parliament for Burnaby South in British Columbia, and he served as NDP leader from 2017 to 2025. He lost his seat in the House of Commons during the federal election earlier this year, and announced his plans to step down as party leader shortly afterward.

Don Davies, the MP for Vancouver Kingsway, has been serving as the interim party leader since May.
