Canada's Members of Parliament vote who'll replace Anthony Rota for the House of Commons
OTTAWA - There will soon be a new Speaker for the House of Commons.
Members of Parliament will be voting for their next Speaker today, following Anthony Rota's resignation. MPs from all parties have voiced their interest in the position, including Green Party Leader Elizabeth May.
Rota stepped down last week, after he invited parliamentarians and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to applaud a military veteran guest, unaware that that this person had served in a Nazi unit in World War II. Bloc Quebecois MP Louis Plamondon, the longest-serving member of the House, has been serving as the Interim Speaker ever since.
Rota is the third speaker in Canadian history to leave the position mid-session.
