MPP Jennie Stevens says Niagara's long term care workers are being mistreated by big long-term corporations.
St. Catharines MPP Jennie Stevens is supporting picketing workers and residents at Revera’s Garden City Manor nursing home.
A picket is being held outside the home this afternoon from 1 PM to 4 PM.
Stevens released a statement, saying frontline workers at the home have not been adequately paid, and sick days have not been properly managed during the pandemic.
"Frontline workers at Niagara’s long-term care homes deserve to be treated fairly, with adequate pay, vacation and sick days, so they can give the best possible care to residents", Stevens says. "For two years, workers at Garden City have had to fight with management to get the basics, while fighting their own burnout and trying to give residents the care they deserve."
Garden City Manor is a 200 bed for profit long-term care home in St. Catharines, and is one of over 50 Ontario long term care homes owned by Revera.
In April 2020, a $50 million class action lawsuit was brought against Revera by two families over its response to the pandemic.
Stevens is also calling on Premier Doug Ford to remove profit from long term care.
