MPP Burch fighting back in response to service changes at urgent care centres in Port Colborne and Fort Erie
Niagara Centre MPP Jeff Burch is asking the province to help bring back overnight service at the urgent care centre in Port Colborne.
He brought the issue up in Question Period today, saying residents will now have to receive emergency support at the Welland hospital, which is facing it's own challenges in relation to emergency services.
"People don’t plan to need urgent health care services in the middle of the night," said Burch. "But when emergencies strike, the people in my community need to have confidence that they have access to nearby, timely health care. Where are people supposed to turn when there is no urgent care or limited emergency care in their community?"
Health Minister Sylvia Jones responded by saying it's not up to politicians to question the decisions of hospital leaders.
She also pointed to a recent decision by the province to allow Ontario's nursing college to give internationally educated nurses a chance to practice while they work on getting registered.
