Niagara Conservatives demanding this week changes to the justice system
Federal Conservatives have been relentless in their quest to toughen Canada's justice system.
Earlier this week it was Niagara Centre MP Fred Davies demanding change after a 3-year old girl was sexually assaulted in Welland, today it was Niagara Falls MP Tony Baldinelli demanding offenders like Paul Bernardo stay in maximum security.
He accused the Liberals, after 10-years in power, of obstructing Jail Not Bail legislation. "In Niagara, residents were horrified when they heard of Daniel Senecal breaking into a Welland home and sexually assaulting a 3-year old girl while her family slept."
Parliamentary Secretary to Combatting Crime Vince Gasparro said no one wants animals like that on our streets. "Our new government has 3 initiatives in front of us... the first is a strong borders act, the second is bail reform, and the 3rd is safe zone, hate zone legislation."
He then challenged the Conservatives to back them in getting tough on crime.
"I didn't hear an answer from the honourable member whether he was going to support our tough on crime legislation, I guess the canned answer you had prepared beforehand didn't prepare you for that, so that's ok."
Baldinelli said violent crime is up 55% after 10-years of Liberal catch and release policies.
Also this week, Kamloops MP Frank Caputo introduced a bill to make murder in intimate partner violence classified as 1st degree murder. Two years ago, the Niagara Region declared intimate partner violence an epidemic.
