Coast Guard invokes authority over abandoned ship
The federal government is going head with the partial dismantling of the local treasure.
The town of Lincoln tweeting out, "We are sorry to learn the masts of La Grand Hermine in Jordan Habour will be removed by the Coast Guard who has the authority over the future of the ship."
The town says "While we recognize that public safety is paramount, it is unfortunate that further investigations did not take place to map out how the masts and ship could continue to be a local, safe tourist attraction in Niagara."
The ship has delighted travellers along the QEW since 1997 when its owner, hoping to set up a river boat casino in Niagara, abandoned it in the harbour.
It has since fallen into disrepair and was the victim of arson a few years ago.
