Marineland to Make Next Move: Minister

Federal fisheries minister Joanne Thompson calls plan to move belugas to US solid

Canada's Fisheries Minister is confident the plan to move the remaining whales and dolphins from Marineland to US aquariums will move forward.

As for criticism they're not going to animal sanctuaries, Joanne Thompson said today those sites are not available, in looking at all options.

She added it's up to Marineland to decide when this happens.  "That the health of the whales and dolphins is assessed by an accredited vet, and then the transportation plan.  Then, once the belugas are moved, part of the accreditation of these sites is that the health supports are available."

She says the sites to be used are world-class for animal welfare.

"The sites are accredited, the highest standards for animal welfare in the world, and certainly once the conditions are satisfied, I think this is a solid plan."

She recently granted conditional permits for the move.
