Niagara on the Lake's Gary Zalepa says visitation is down to local stores
A message to all Americans from Niagara on the Lake's Lord Mayor during this tariff war with the US.
Gary Zalepa is encouraging you to keep visiting Canada.
He notes local businesses are seeing a drop in American visitors, but there are a few that still come. "They were asking people if they were visiting from the US, and the folks visiting were sheepish... so there's a definitely a concern with Americans feeling like maybe they're not welcome here. So, I keep trying to repeat that the problem is not with the American people, the problem is with the government."
He adds there is a rally in Buffalo late Wednesday afternoon, in support of the partnership between Canada and the US.
The town is also meeting regularly with businesses, through workshops. "Some members of our council, and myself, have sat in on some of those, just to get a gauge... and there's definitely a trepidation, and they're telling us they're definitely seeing slower traffic and less people."
However, he says the focus on buying local keeps growing, as well as other international markets.
