Canadian Niagara Power wants to be ready should another storm such as in 2022 happen again
Some upgrades in technology are in the works for Canadian Niagara Power, to prevent power outages similar to the 2022 winter storm.
Regional Manager Jeff Hoover told Fort Erie council recently about the use of smart switches, which narrow down the outage to a smaller area, and keep the remaining line working. "Reducing the number of customers without power. The smart switches narrow down the area where the fault is located, reducing the amount of time it takes for line crews to restore power."
The company says it is adding to its online outage map, as well as enabling customers to receive text messages concerning outages and problems.
"Before year end, we'd like to have text based notifications for anyone that subscribes to the service. We'll auto subscribe anyone in our system, and then they can text back stop if they wish to stop seeing those messages."
The company is also increasing communication to the public, via social media, on where it plans maintenance work.
