Fire services in St. Ctharines and Port Colborne are reminding the public about the sounds of fire safety.
As Fire Prevention Week approaches, a pair of local fire services are educating residents about simple actions they can take to remain safe.
This year, Fire Prevention Week is taking place from October 3rd to the 9th, and the theme is "Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety."
Port Colborne Fire Prevention Officer Charles Turpin says it's important for everyone to know the sounds of their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
"Make sure everyone in the home understands the sounds of the alarms and knows how to respond. To learn the sounds of your specific smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, check the manufacturer’s instructions that came in the box, or search the brand and model online."
In St. Catharines, firefighters will visit select schools next week to conduct drills for students.
As well, the general public can meet fire crews in person on October 6th from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Pen Centre, or on October 9th from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Rona on Dunkirk Road.
Residents are being reminded that a continuous set of three loud beeps means smoke or fire and they should get out immediately.
As well, a single chirp every 30 or 60 seconds means that the smoke alarm battery is low.
