Local Airport Pushing Expansion Talks

CAO says growth is number one priority, as Niagara expects population explosion

There is one word on the minds of those at Niagara District Airport... growth.

Airport CAO Dan Pilon says they have a Master Plan moving forward, but they're also doing community consultation to learn what Niagara wants.

He adds the region expects another 700,000 people over 20-years, so everything has to grow.  "What's the forecast of how many passengers we think we can bring in on a regular basis 20-years out, that's what we're saying.  Within that span of 20-years, we probably need to be talking about 500,000 passengers a year in that space... that's transformational."

He says growth could include expanding the runway to getting more carriers.

He also says with international planes already landing, growth will not be cheap.  "Yes, there's all the conversation that happens with respect to housing, but you have to grow the ability to access all those areas.  That talks about what they're going with the [Garden City] skyway, it talks about what we're doing with GO transit... planes, trains and automobiles, right?"

There were recent community meetings with Niagara on the Lake Lord Mayor Gary Zalepa.
