Lathrop Nature Restoration Finished

The 7-year project has led to a new pedestrian bridge, and better protection of fish

A $450,000 restoration project has been finished of the Lathrop Nature Reserve in Fonthill, after 7-years of work.

Nick Armstrong is with the Nature Conservatory of Canada, and says the main goal was to improve water quality for fish and wildlife in the 12-Mile Creek watershed.

He says any visitor will notice a new pedestrian bridge over the old embankment.  "People will probably notice a new channel that looks like it was dug through, where the water now should be running from 12 Mile Creek's headwaters, into 12 Mile Creek, to prevent it from going into the pond itself."

He adds much of the work was fixing the ponds, to prevent warm water from impacting fish.

"And re-routing the channel, to prevent strains of warm water and sediments, into 12 Mile Creek.  In addition, with the relocation of the channel, we've planted over 500 native trees and shrubs."

He gives credit to many groups, including the provincial government, Niagara Community Foundation, and many private donors.
