Homeless Advocate Angered by Vote

Steven Soos says City of Welland already duplicates services, after voting against committee

It's not surprising a homelessness advocate and former addict is furious at Welland city council for voting against an ad hoc committee to handle the issue.

Steven Soos says they turned their backs on people struggling, who need help that's not available in hospitals.

He questioned city staff saying a committee would duplicate existing services.  "Welland council is wasting money like drunken sailors, and with the arena issue, they're duplicating services there.  The issues of mental health, homelessness and addiction are the biggest issues facing Welland right now, along with crime prevention."

He says he made sure the councillors who voted against knew he was upset.

He remains vigilant and unwavering in his fight to make sure others get the help he did.  "I had the State of Emergency declared in 5 different municipalities.  You have Niagara Falls, Grimsby, Welland, Niagara Region, and Thorold... we wouldn't have secured $20.8-million for homelessness prevention at the Niagara region."

He adds investing in homeless people will help them recover and contribute to society.
