Niagara's top doctor warns Thanksgiving could result in a spike of COVID-19 infections.
Niagara's Acting Medical Officer of Health is joining calls for safe Thanksgiving celebrations.
We spoke to Dr. Mustafa Hirji, who says he thinks it's possible that Thanksgiving could cause a rise in COVID-19 infections.
"I definitely think there is a risk of a surge with Thanksgiving, where people would be indoors, having dinner together, socializing together. I see that as a potential for high risk."
He suggests marking the holiday outdoors, keeping a list of attendees, and following safety protocols like wearing a mask and social distancing.
Hirji also suggests the same for trick or treating, but says he agrees with the decision by Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of Health to allow trick or treating this year.
"I think it's a really important time for our children to start to get back to some of their normal routine."
