Police watching to prevent event similar to last year
There will be a significant police presence in neighbourhoods near McMaster University in Hamilton on Saturday.
The Hamilton Police Service says it's in anticipation of ``unsanctioned'' homecoming events, following last year when up to 5,000 people gathered, causing property damage and some were arrested.
Superintendent Dave Hennick says this is unsafe, disruptive, and result in demands on emergency services including hospitals.
They add the city has passed a bylaw making it illegal to host, attend or refuse to leave an area once a gathering has been declared a nuisance -- and people hosting such events may also be liable for remedial costs of policing and emergency services.
