Global Interest in Marineland Whales: Mayor

Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati says he's heard from researchers around the world

Getting reassurance from Niagara Falls Mayor there is global interest in making sure the 30 beluga whales at Marineland find a home.

During Tuesday's council meeting, city staff and Councillor Lori Lococo had a discussion on some legal and financial issues.

Mayor Jim Diodati added they're looking.  "Groups that are already working on places around the world that could potentially take them.   So, I'm not at liberty to share yet, because they're still researching, they're using ocean experts to help them, but I can tell you that some top people in the world are looking at this trying to come up with solutions."

Marineland had said Tuesday was the deadline for euthanizing the whales, but that did not happen.

Councillor Lococo mentioned Nova Scotia was an option.  "It was going to be a 200 acre piece of water, and they were going to fence off 100 acres for the animals.  But there's some legal challenges with the owners that live along the water, because now their water rights and access is going to be limited."

She repeated the federal government said China is not an option.
