Former owners fined for failing to install smoke, carbon monoxide alarms.
The former owners of the Capri Motel in Port Colborne have been issued a hefty fine for violating the Ontario Fire Code.
On February 4th, Port Colborne Fire and Emergency Services conducted an inspection at the motel after receiving a complaint.
Several violations were observed, and the building owners at the time were charged for failing to install a smoke alarm and a carbon monoxide alarm.
Earlier today, a Provincial Offences Court issued a $6,500 fine.
"We’re thankful that these violations were identified before anything serious could have happened," commented Fire Chief Scott Lawson. "Working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms save lives. I hope this conviction acts as a reminder to residents and business owners of buildings in Port Colborne of their responsibilities under the Fire Code."
Working smoke alarms are mandatory under the law.
As well, residences with a fuel fire appliance or attached garage are required to have a working carbon monoxide alarm.
Property owners who fail to meet these requirements could face fines of up to $50,000 per count.
