The DSBN is going to reduce class sizes for the upcoming school year.
Chair Sue Barnett says they're going to use one percent of their accumulated surplus to hire more staff and lower class sizes by about 3 or 4 students.
The board is going to use about $4.5-million, combined with other funds, to hire 60 to 70 teachers.
The average Kindergarten class size should be about 22 students.
Grades 1 to 3 should have about 17 students and Grades 4 to 8 should have about 20 to 25 students per classroom.
Director of Education Warren Hoshizaki says lowering the class sizes will help protect the health and safety of all DSBN staff and students.
The board has also limited secondary school class sizes to about 15 students and this was included in the adaptive plan that was approved by the Ministry of Education.
