Niagara crossed a grim milestone Friday with 601 confirmed COVID-19 deaths reported by public health since the start of the pandemic, in one of the deadliest months the region has seen since before vaccinations were widely available.
Niagara acting medical officer of health Dr. Mustafa Hirji said the region continues to see a significant number of known active infections, with more than a thousand as of Friday.
There have been 33 COVID-19 deaths so far this month in Niagara — closing in on the 36 deaths reported in January of this year.
The virus claimed 54 lives in February of 2021.
