Council Advocating for Douglas Memorial

Fort Erie town council heard of urgent need to restore hours, says it is working with provincial government and Niagara Health

HealthCare SOS making an urgent appeal to Fort Erie town council it do what it can to restore around the clock care at Douglas Memorial hospital.

Heather Kelley stressed Fort Erie is a growing town, and common sense says scaling back on service puts peoples' lives at risk.  "I know that urgent care is not emergency care, but let me say this, if I'm experiencing chest pains, and not sure of what is happening, I'm going to the closest centres available, so if something does happen, I have people with medical training that can assist and hopefully stabilize me."

The hours of the urgent care centres in Fort Erie and Port Colborne were reduced to 10am to 8pm, while construction of the new South Niagara hospital continues in Niagara Falls.

Mayor Wayne Redekop assured her the town has been meeting with the provincial minister of health, other government bodies, and Niagara Health to restore funding.  The Town also released a statement indicating it's making health care a top priority in its Corporate Strategic Plan to 2026.

The mayor also says 5-doctors have been hired in the last 5-years, and two in the last 2-years.

Redekop said the province recently handed $2.1-million to Niagara health team.

"And, further, that the Council of the Town of Fort Erie request that Niagara Health work with the Town of Fort Erie to secure the necessary human resources, and funding, required to permit Niagara Health to continue operation of the Fort Erie Urgent Care centre on a full-time basis."
