Closures Don't Have to Take Place: Mayor

Wayne Redekop to reveal information tomorrow at Fort Erie town hall that'll leave unsavoury taste

The mayor of Fort Erie is not happy after he and Port Colborne Mayor Bill Steele met yesterday with Niagara Health.

They were told of urgent care centre reductions for the summer, which has led to a public meeting tomorrow at 1pm, at Fort Erie town hall chambers, hosted by the two mayors.

Wayne Redekop adds they met with Niagara Health three weeks ago.  "We had been left with the impression that there'd be an opportunity to work with Niagara Health before they made any decisions about closing anything at our urgent care centres in July and August... but, it turns out that may have been wishful thinking."

Niagara Health has stated it's been trying to find more doctors, but with little success.  It's moving doctors from the care centres to emergency rooms in St. Catharines, Niagara Falls and Welland hospitals instead.

Wayne Redekop adds people will leave with a bad taste after tomorrow's public meeting.

He says Niagara Health can say what it wants when it comes to recruitment efforts, but actions speak louder than words.  "They're very difficult to deal with, it's very hard to get them to relinquish any authority to allow you to work with them, it's difficult to get information from them."

Niagara Health is closing Fort Erie centre on Fridays and the Civic holiday weekend.  Port Colborne is closing Saturdays, and both are closing Canada Day and Labour Day weekends.
