City of Welland Warns Residents About Fake Media Releases on Social Media

Officials say fake post with City of Welland logo circulated on social media over the weekend.

The City of Welland is warning residents to be mindful of a fake media post circulated on social media this weekend.

Officials say a fake media release image, complete with the City's logo and media release styling, was posted on a Facebook group.

The fake release indicated the construction of a natural land bridge due to backfilling the Welland Canal, resulting in significant confusion for residents and a number of calls to staff and councillors.

"It is disheartening that someone took the time and effort to attempt to recreate an official city document to create confusion and anger," said Marc MacDonald, corporate communications manager. "All official City communications go out through the same channels and can easily and quickly be verified on our website. If residents have questions about the validity of posts they see online that appear to be from the City of Welland, they are encouraged to contact us."

The City says it doesn't include images in its media releases or end release headlines with punctuation such as periods.

Official press releases can be found on the City of Welland website
