Charges Laid in Welland Downtown Galleria Crash

A Welland man is facing a list of charges, after he allegedly crashed a car into the Downtown Galleria.

An NRP officer first spotted the beige Chevy Impala shortly after 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning.

It was using a plastic sheet as a rear window, and the officer also discovered that the license plate did not match the vehicle.

The officer tried to pull over the car but it sped away. The officer did not chase the car out of concern for public safety.

The NRP says the Impala hit a parked car not too long afterwards, causing $10,000 in damage.

The vehicle left the road and drove onto the sidewalk afterwards; where it hit a light post, metal garbage cans and a sidewalk barrier.

That’s when the car drove into the Welland Downtown Galleria, causing $15,000 in damage to the front of the building.

Police say no one was hurt, and the driver got out of the car and ran off with a white dog.

The NRP arrested a 43-year-old man at a home on Division Street later in the day.

He has been charged with the following offences;

- Flight from Police
- Failure to Stop at the Scene of an Accident
- Fail to Comply with a Probation Order
- Owner Operate Motor Vehicle on Highway (No Insurance)
- Drive Motor Vehicle with No Currently Validated Permit
- Drive Motor Vehicle No License
- Use Plate Not Authorized for Vehicle
- Use Validation Not Furnished for Vehicle

Anyone who may have witnessed this incident should contact Niagara Regional Police by calling 905-688-4111 with extension 3300.
