Residents urged not to move firewood or hemlock materials
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) says hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) - an insect that kills hemlock trees - has been found in Fort Erie.
The insect kills the trees by attaching itself to the base of hemlock needles and feeding on sugars that would normally provide nutrients to the trees.
Residents are urged to prevent the spread of HWA by not moving hemlock materials or firewood.
This detection of HWA is outside of currently regulated areas, and includes Niagara Falls and Wainfleet.
The agency says a ministerial order will be issued to restrict the movement of hemlock material like roots, seeds, bulbs, nursery stock and other plant parts.
The order will also apply to firewood, logs, branches and woodchips.
The CFIA notes there is no threat to the health of humans.
