Jeremy Hanson selected for Artemis II mission

A Canadian astronaut will soon be part of a historic mission.

As part of the Artemis II mission, Jeremy Hansen will become the first Canadian astronaut to fly around the moon.

This will be the first crewed missing to the moon since the Apollo program ended 50 years ago.

The Canadian Space Agency says Artemis II is expected to launch in November 2024.

The plan is to put a man and a woman on the moon in 2025 in order to eventually dispatch astronauts to Mars.

This will make Canada the second country ever to send an astronaut around the moon.

"Being part of the Artemis II crew is both exciting and humbling," Hansen says. "I'm excited to leverage my experience, training, and knowledge to take on this challenging mission on behalf of Canada. I'm humbled by the incredible contributions and hard work of so many Canadians that have made this opportunity a reality. I am proud and honoured to represent my country on this historic mission."

Hansen will be joined by American astronauts Christina Koch, Victor Glover and Reid Wiseman for the ten day orbit.
