Cameras Not Raised Due to Vandalism: Region

Councillors say most complaints from residents revolve around the cameras

Some clarification from the Niagara region concerning those speed cameras.

It's an issue many councillors say they receive the most correspondence from residents on, many complaining it's a tax grab, and signs warning of the cameras are not visible enough.

Transportation Services Director Frank Tassone told a public works meeting they are not a tax grab, but meant to slow traffic down.

He added the camera was not raised higher on a pole due to vandalism.  "What had originally happened at the onset of the program is the hardware was not available for us to do the pole mounted for the start of the school year, so we put in the mobile unit in order to launch at the beginning of the school year."

Councillor Robert Foster noted people have told him they have learned not to speed.

Tassone further spoke against the cash grab argument.

"If we see ticket revenues going up, but behaviours not changing, that's actually not a success for us.  What we want to be doing here is changing behaviour, lowering speeds on the road, thereby making the roads safe, so it's not about funding for us."

Councillor Tom Issinna finds it humorous people complain, saying speed limit signs are posted.
