Niagara police warning residents about puppy scams.
Police say with so many people isolated at home, people have decided they may need some canine companionship.
And scammers are taking advantage of that.
Police say puppy scams are on the rise in the region with scammers typically requesting money up front for a new puppy from sellers.
The scammer makes excuses why they can't meet and after the initial fee is sent the buyer then is contacted by a fake shipping company asking for more money to ship the animal in a specialized crate.
Sometimes, the buyer is also asked for money to pay for insurance for the dog or more money because the animal is sick.
Police recommend buyers request several references including the vaccinating vet, hold payment until physically seeing the dog, or check with the Canadian Kennel Club to confirm they are a listed breeder.
Although the CKC has come under fire for not vetting breeders on that list.
