Airport Continues Expansion Talk

Niagara District Airport officials spoke to about 100 people in another public information session

Another public meeting at the Niagara District Airport, on expansion plans for the next 20 years.

CEO Dan Pilon says roughly 100 people showed last week, to hear about expanding the runway, adding to the terminal, and more flights to and from the eastern seaboard.

He also pointed to the importance of federal, provincial and private partnership.  "Our ownership is the City of Niagara Falls, the City of St. Catharines, and the Town of Niagara on the Lake.  They have a lot of other capital budget issues and items they have to continue to pay for, so we need partnerships to be able to support what this looks like."

He didn't hear any negative comments from last week's meeting, but mostly about progress, and increasing the number of yearly flights from 42,000 currently to about 50,000.

He adds aviation enthusiasts to people living near the airport showed up.  "We certainly had business who were there talking about how this could support and grow, and be a massive uplift to the economy... not just the tourism sector, but beyond that."

He says previous airport administration has worked on expansion, which can be challenging.
