Premier Doug Ford on hand this morning at the JBL plant, as it adds production of xanthum gum, creating 50 jobs
Premier Doug Ford and others were in Port Colborne this morning, welcoming a $200-million expansion by JBL manufacturing at the local plant.
It'll add production of xanthum gum, creating 50 new jobs.
Mayor Bill Steele pointed to the plant's global reach, including citric acid made at the plant is in Redbull drink. "This is a huge expansion of this plant, and as you can see here to my left, this isn't just happening now, it's been happening since the day they finished the original plant. They've been expanding ever since, with new wear housing and the xanthum gum plant."
It's expected this work will increase demand for Ontario-grown corn. In support of this, Ontario is providing $4.8-million is funding through the Invest Ontario Fund.
Economic Development Minister Vic Fideli was also there. "Jungbunzlauer's expansion to their existing foot print on this site will create Canada's first ever manufacturing facility for xanthum gum, and will cement Port Colborne's place as a key player in Ontario's manufacturing eco-system."
Xanthum gum is a fermented sugar used to thicken and stabilize products in food, health care, and many sectors.
Premier Ford said the province has a $57-billion in food and beverage industry, adding he's confident the Port Colborne plant is a large part of that.
