Whales 'Holding Steady' at Marineland

Animal Justice estimates it'll be a year before they're moved to Nova Scotia

The Executive Director of Animal Justice calls it a marathon, not a sprint, to keep the remaining beluga whales alive at Marineland before they're moved.

Camille Labchuk says it'll still be roughly a year before a sanctuary in Nova Scotia is ready.

She adds it's up to the Ontario government to do individual health assessments on the whales.  "And determine which whales could actually be sent to the sanctuary, and what the best options are for each one of them.  That could be a lengthy process too, so it should start immediately.  Ontario has tremendous power to help these belugas."

She adds she'd be shocked to hear of one vet in Canada who agrees to kill those whales, and, she says not one person working at the park is willing to help, which would be needed.

She recalls when Marineland said euthanizing them might be the only option.  "And try to force the government to pay for them, because the Marineland belugas are Marineland's problem.  They've made hundreds of millions of dollars off them in the last number of years, and they're the ones who should be ensuring that they [the whales] have a place worth living."

She also says breeding of whales was outlawed in Canada a few years ago.  Prior to that, whales were dying at the same rate seen over the last few years, but because of breeding, she says the deaths were masked, or hidden.
