Welland Property Owners Sued After Two Warnings and a Fire

A $15,000 fine has been handed down to the owners of a property in Welland.

The owners of 240-242 East Main Street received the fine today after they were convicted for failing to comply with an inspection order.

In June 2019, Welland Fire & Emergency Services (WFES) were called to the home in response to a fire safety complaint.

Fire Prevention Officers (FPOs) noted several deficiencies, including holes in fire separations, inadequate fire separations between hallways and apartments, and the lack of a fire safety plan.

In January 2020, FPOs returned, finding that the owners didn't comply with the inspection order.

Prosecution was initiated against the property owners.

In July, WFES attended the same property to put out a structure fire.

The blaze occurred in a second floor apartment and was extinguished.

Investigators discovered that six of the building's smoke alarms didn't work, so a further prosecution was brought on against the owners.

WFES is reminding property owners to ensure their buildings meet the standards put forth by the Ontario Fire Code.

Inspection orders are mandatory, and deficiencies need to be fixed within the listed timeframe.
