Welland Fire and Emergency Services say that water in Ontario is colder than most people realize.
A person who falls into cold water can go into shock within one minute and only survive for a few minutes.
Motorized activities on frozen bodies of water are especially risky , as repeated passes can cause the ice to fracture.
Some ice safety tips include checking the thickness of the ice, and staying near the shore.
Residents can also check the colour of the ice.
Clear blue ice is considered the strongest, whereas white or opaque ice is much weaker.
