Europe's largest automaker will soon build its first overseas battery manufacturing plant in Ontario.

Volkswagen has announced an electric vehicle battery manufacturing plant will be established in St. Thomas.

The automaker says production is expected to start in 2027.

Last year, the company signed an agreement with the federal government to identify suitable suites for a facility in Canada.

In the past two years, Canada has seen at least ten major commitments relating to electric vehicles, coming to over $16 billion, as federal and provincial governments continue to seek investments in the sector.

Federal Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne and Ontario Economic Development Minister Vic Fedeli say the news is a big vote of confidence in the roles Canada and Ontario have in the electric vehicle supply chain.

"This historic investment is a testament to Canada’s strong and growing battery ecosystem and Ontario’s competitive business environment. With a highly skilled workforce, clean energy, an abundance of critical minerals, access to markets, and a flourishing automotive and battery sector, we are an attractive investment destination with everything companies need to grow. In addition, Canada and Ontario offer stability and predictability to their business partners."
