Union Not Happy with Hiring Contractors

About a dozen picketers showed this morning, with no end to strike in sight

There's concern from GO Transit bus drivers picketing in Niagara Falls their jobs will be contracted out to outside labour.

About a dozen people showed up this morning at Stanley Avenue and Highway 420, with picket captain John Sanders pointing out their frustration with what they say is the number one issue.

"Presently they have hired security to do work in the stations that's covered by both our station attendants, and our transit safety people.  Obviously you have a subcontractor doing two peoples' jobs," he says.

The picket captain adds if this continues, everyone could be replaced by subcontractors.

He also points to driver layovers as being another issue.  "They want that cleared up... there's times and half time rules that are being addressed, and they're making good progress with that.  It's simply the contracting out language."

Sanders says he can't figure out why Metrolinx, the company that runs GO Transit, would use outside workers when the union says it has people already to do the work.
