Two Welland Corporate Property Owners Fined Thousands For Fire Code Violations

Fire Code enforcement nets thousands in fines.

Two Welland property owners are facing large fines for fire code violations.

On September 2nd, 2021, Welland Fire and Emergency Services (WFES) attended a property on Hellems Avenue to follow up on a fire safety complaint.

Fire prevention officers discovered a two-story building with commercial storefronts on the ground floor and residential apartments on the second floor.

A fire safety inspection took place, and it was discovered that the fire alarm system servicing the building had not been properly maintained for several years.

Officials also also an approved fire safety plan had not been implemented at the building.

A fine of $6,000 was issued against the corporate ownership.

Meanwhile, on January 12th, WFES received a fire safety complaint about a property on Southworth Street North.

Officers say the retail/commercial building had unlawfully been converted into three residential apartments.

Numerous fire code violations were spotted, including a failure to install and maintain smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

The corporate owner was taken to court and fined $5,000.

WFES is reminding residents, particularly landlords, that fire code compliance is mandatory.
