Top Public Health Officials Calling for Stay at Home Order in Ontario

The top doctors of Toronto, Ottawa and Peel are pushing the Ford government to issue a stay at home order.

In a letter to Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams, Dr. Eileen de Villa, Dr. Vera Etches and Dr. Lawrence Loh say that the province wide shutdown does not do enough to curb the spread of COVID-19.

"A stay-at-home order issued by the province through an emergency order is necessary to prevent and mitigate large scale morbidity and mortality and irreparable strain on the health-care system."

The doctors are urging the province to conduct a review of businesses considered essential and impose travel restrictions between Ontario regions.

The letter also pushes for a return to online learning and paid sick days.

A similar recommendation was made last week by the Ontario Science Advisory Table.

When the shutdown was announced on Thursday, the province refrained from issuing a stay at home order, citing mental health concerns.
