Party Leaders Focus on Greater Toronto and Hamilton Today

Ending for-profit LTC was focus of three leaders Thursday

Ontario's main opposition parties say the COVID-19 pandemic showed that private, for-profit corporations should not be in the business of elder care.

The New Democrats, Liberals and Green Party are vowing to get rid of for-profit long-term care,  a move rejected by the Progressive Conservatives who are focused instead on adding new beds.

P-C leader Doug Ford did not take questions from the media Thursday.

Liberal Leader Steven Del Duca told supporters in Richmond Hill that Ford seems to believe that putting shareholders ahead of seniors is the way to fix problems highlighted by the pandemic.

N-D-P leader Andrea Horwath says both the Liberals and the P-Cs are to blame for a long-term care crisis that began well before COVID-19.

According research conducted by scientists working for the government, more than 4,500 long-term care residents died due to COVID-19.

For-profit homes had nearly twice as many residents infected with the virus and 78 per cent more deaths compared with non-profit homes.

With less than a week to go to the election, the leaders are focusing their attention on the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area today.

Doug Ford will speak in Oakville today, Andrea Horwath hits Toronto, then Hamilton and Mississauga, the Liberals Steven Del Duca will be in Mississauga and Brampton.
