Premier Doug Ford says hospitals in Niagara and beyond should get ready.

He says his government is looking at giving the greenlight to non-COVID-19 related care once again.

“We have developed a framework to restart scheduled surgeries and procedures safely. Starting with the most urgent surgeries like cancer and cardiac procedures.”

Ford says every hospital will have the ability to plan around their own unique situation.

The framework is titled A Measured Approach to Planning for Surgeries and Procedures During the COVID-19 Pandemic says each hospital must have the following before they can resume scheduled surgeries;

- A stable number of COVID-19 cases;

- A stable supply of personal protective equipment;

- A stable supply of medications;

- An adequate capacity of inpatient and intensive care unit beds;

- An adequate capacity of health human resources; and

- The availability of post-acute care outside the hospital that would be required to support patients after discharge.

Health Minister and Deputy Premier Christine Elliott says there is no timeline for when the procedures will be allowed to resume.

She says it’s several weeks away.
