Statistics Canada Reports 22,000 Jobs Added in February

Unemployment steady at five percent

Statistics Canada says the economy added 22,000 jobs last month.

Most of the gains were in health care, social assistance, public administration and utilities.

The jobless rate was at five percent.

The agency also says the gap between wage growth and inflation narrowed, with average hourly wages about 5.4 percent higher compared to a year ago.

The Bank of Canada says the wage growth will make it more difficult for the bank to bring down inflation.

However, the bank also notes it expects the labour market to ease in the coming months, as higher interest rates slow spending by businesses and individuals.
