St. Catharines Taking Steps To Develop More Affordable Housing

City sells land to developer in exchange for social housing commitment

Council has approved the sale of city owned land on Geneva Street to Penn Terra Group for $1.35 million.

The roughly 3.8 acre site, formerly home to the city's Community, Recreation and Culture Services Building, will be home to a development that is 43 percent affordable housing, 14 percent social housing and 43 percent market rate housing.

The complex will include a nine storey building with 180 rental units and a four storey building with 32 townhomes,

As well there will be 19,000 square feet of commercial space and three community gardens.

Mayor Walter Sendzik says “Today is a great day for those advocating for affordable, attainable and social housing in St. Catharines. Council and staff have been focused on finding ways to address the housing crisis in our community. Last night’s decision to move forward with selecting a building company with a solid track record to construct social, affordable and attainable housing on city-controlled land is a first in St. Catharines. We are addressing housing affordability and this is another strong example of our commitment as a city.”
