St. Catharines Receives Infrastructure Funds From Province and Feds

City to create new and improved trails, invest in transportation

The federal and provincial governments joined the City of St. Catharines for an infrastructure announcement today.

The municipality is getting $1.03 million through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP).

The money will cover the construction of 1.5 km of new trails and 1 km worth of upgrades and connectivity investments.

Mayor Walter Sendzik says this is great news for residents who enjoy the outdoors.

"These new and improved trails will create new connections for people to access parks and public spaces and enhance our active transportation network across the City. As we have all seen over the last year, parks, trails and recreation spaces are important for quality of life and healthy, active living."

The assistance has freed up resources, allowing the City to invest an addition $1.19 million in transportation projects.

Projects being funded under ICIP include a new trail through Fairview Park from Scott Street to Fairview Mall, and upgrades to Merritt Trail, including an extension of the trail south from the railway crossing near Moffat Street to Glendale Avenue.

It'll also cover new trail connections linking Pearson Park to nearby neighbourhoods and upgrades to Rennie Park Trail.

Meanwhile, the City's investment in transportation will include projects such as the widening of the Welland Canals Parkway Trail and the development of an Active Transportation Master Plan.
