Jennie Stevens says seniors are being forced out of their homes under the guise of necessary renovations.

A St. Catharines MPP is urging Premier Doug Ford to take action to stop illegal renovictions.

During Question Period today, Jennie Stevens told the Premier that many seniors in St. Catharines are being forced out of their homes in apartment buildings.

"Seniors in St. Catherines are being forced out of the homes they have lived in for decades because greedy speculators are buying up rental buildings and issuing mass eviction orders under the guise of needing people to move so they can renovate. Many of these seniors have no internet access and are unsure about how to fight back against illegal renovictions at the Landlord and Tenant Board. They are being bullied by landlords who just want them gone."

Stevens claims that those who do choose to stay are facing rent increases ranging from $900 - $2,000 per month due to the renovations.

The NDP has introduced the Rent Stabilization Act, which they say would close the loophole allowing landlords to increase rent prices when a tenant leaves.
