St. Catharines Fire Services Reminds Residents of Ban on Open Burning

St. Catharines Fire Services has issued a warning to local residents.

Citizens are being asked to keep the ban on open burns in mind as they start to enjoy the warmer weather.

Outdoor fires are not permitted under the City's Open-Air Burning By-law in urban areas.

The by-law does allow for some burning in agricultural areas, but only with an approved permit.

Fire Chief Jeff McCormick warns there are a lot of risks to outdoor fires.

"It’s always great to see our residents enjoying their properties, but we want them to do it safely. Outdoor fires pose considerable risks in urban areas where fire can spread quickly to adjacent properties. On top of this drifting smoke can be unpleasant for neighbours, and in some cases negatively impact the health of others, especially those with respiratory diseases or issues."

Those who fail to comply with the by-law may be charged, as well as receive a $268 fine.
